You may hear people speak of assisted living (AL) or skilled nursing and long-term care facilities (SNFs and LTCs), but do you really know the difference? There are distinct differences between these two living environments. Overall, AL is for those who may need some help or care with daily living but are overall healthier and more capable than those in a SNF or LTC environment.

Type of Care Provided – Daily Living Activities, not a Medical Care Model

AL communities provide daily living activities such as grooming, dressing, dining and disease management. They do not provide a medical care model such as lifts or full non-ambulatory needs or advanced feeding.

Type of Home – Apartment, not a Room

AL provides a private apartment home with private baths and kitchens. The medical care model of LTC is usually a single room (sometimes with a roommate or shared bathroom).

Lifestyle

AL residents are more independent and can come and go as they please from their home. Many residents can still drive, cook and take care of pets. These residents also expect a very active calendar of events that stimulate the mind, body and spirit. The right home choice can make all the difference.
